Bald Eagle Watching on the Mississippi River

January 23, 2009

Every winter, St. Louis gets some very special visitors along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers when migratory Bald Eagles stop here to eat and rest. These majestic birds often stop in our area because many water sources remain unfrozen and excellent hunting grounds for the raptors. Eagle watchers at the pedestrian/cycling only Chain of Rocks Bridge or other "Eagle Days" areas often see the birds in the trees near the water or flying near the water's edge. If you look carefully, you can also glimpse the eagles in the wild from the area's many bridges. So far, 2009 has been a record year of eagle sighting with many of the birds sighted along the rivers. Seeing these beautiful birds in their natural habitat is a unique and memorable experience for kids and adults.
