Books that keep us laughing
November 18, 2008
Part of the enjoyment of reading to my kids is acting as silly as possible- exaggerating voices, making silly faces and reenacting actions. A wonderful benefit of funny books is kids often want to re-read them and don't grow bored with the story. Sometimes, they memorize lines which can help them recognize words the words they have heard in type.
The following books are particular favorites that keep us laughing as we read them over and over again.
Oh Say Can You Say
A classic Dr Seuss book of tongue twisting rhymes, Oh Say Can You Say is not necessarily an easy book to read to your kids but it will have them cracking up as you stumble through progressively harder tales. It is full of typically Seussian characters like The Grox and the Fuddnuddler Brothers.
Goodnight Gorilla
There isn't a lot of dialogue in this tale of wayward zoo animals who follow the zookeeper home and into his bedroom. What makes this book so fun to read is making up the animal's voices and feigning amazement the zookeeper doesn't realize the animals are following him.
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
In my house, we sing this book as we read it and my kids have been known of jump up and down on their own beds. It is a simple book but one that we know by heart and always ends up in giggles.
Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Nothing is going well for Alexander. From gum in his hair to the wrong colored shoes and getting in trouble for his brother's behavior, Alexander is miserable. This book is great fun to read with its repeating refrain or a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
