Memberships for christmas

December 18, 2008

One way to get more value when buying presents is by giving passes and memberships to local attractions. The past two Christmases, I have given my son and husband season passes to Six Flags Mid-America and there are many other local attractions that sell gift memberships perfect for the holidays. The City Museum sells different levels of memberships to their unique museum. We will be heading  Read more...

A kid friendly christmas tree

December 16, 2008

One day, I will have a perfect Christmas tree. It will be lit with sparkling blue and white strings of lights with branches weighed down with shiny, glass ornaments. This year? Our tree is the complete opposite of that vision but is perfect for our young children. We chose an artificial, pre-lit tree for our home because my daughter is allergic to pine trees but even if she wasn't, our kids  Read more...

Deck the halls with these holiday carols

December 13, 2008

My kids love music and singing so teaching them and joining them in singing Christmas carols has been tremendously fun for our family. Our nine year old son joined a children's choir this year so he has been our choral cheerleader. One night, he asked us to turn the house lights off and sit around the lit Christmas tree on pillows and blankets. He had a sheet of holiday songs and lyrics from  Read more...

Christmas Traditions on Main Street

December 12, 2008

Main Street in Historic St. Charles is transformed every December into a traditional Christmas wonderland full of characters from different countries and times. Visiting Main Street around Christmas time has become a cherished tradition in our family and there are pictures of my siblings and I at the same spots where we now take pictures of our own children. The celebration has grown since we  Read more...

A Green Christmas

December 10, 2008

The Holidays are often a time for excess with food, parties, gifts but the revelry can also leave excess higher electric bills, yards of crumpled wrapping paper and cheap toys that are practically disposable. There are a few simple things you can do this season to reduce waste, lower your electric bill and still give memorable gifts or throw a great party. Christmas lights are beautiful and  Read more...

Christmas toys and games on our lists

December 09, 2008

My younger kids have recently gotten into The Very Hungry Caterpillar and think it is hilarious how much the caterpillar can eat. This game , based on the Eric Carle book, guides kids around the board as the worm collects food. The rules are much like Candyland and easy for young kids to understand. The first one to turn into a butterfly wins! Speaking of Candyland , we'll be buying it again  Read more...

Holiday Cards with Kids

December 05, 2008

My family may not follow all of the holiday traditions but we always send out Christmas cards to family and friends across the country. This year, we are tried something different with our holiday cards by making our own greeting cards. Making cards can be simple or very complicated depending on how involved and kid oriented you want the cards to be. When the kids were too young  Read more...

Wild Lights at the St. Louis Zoo

December 03, 2008

The St. Louis Zoo gets decked out in lights this time of year to celebrate the holidays. With tons of lights and animated displays, the U.S. Bank Wild Lights at the Zoo is a perfect event for kids. Included in admission are activities for kids like story telling sessions, costumed characters to entertain and singing carolers from local choirs. As always, the animals are the main attraction and  Read more...

Christmas list toys

December 02, 2008

My kids prefer making christmas list collages with cut out pictures from advertisements , catalogs and print outs from web pages. I cut the pictures out for the little ones and let them glue their pictures on construction paper with a glue stick. Here are a few selections from this year's wish list: My kids are completely enamored with Spike the Dinosaur thanks to the large display at our local  Read more...

Santa's Magical Kingdom is a 35 acre display in Eureka's Jellystone Park. There are wagon rides through the park available as an alternative to driving through the park. In addition, the Santa Express Train is ready for kids to ride. Free pictures with Santa are also available for visitors. The park and display is open from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 5:30 p.m. to 11  Read more...

It's the most wonderful time of the year

November 17, 2008

The department stores brought out Christmas trees the day after Halloween and Santa is already sitting in the mall waiting for kids to sit on his knee. Whether you want to accept it or not, the winter holidays are almost here and the evidence it unavoidable. One big item on my family's December checklist is family pictures to send out to friends and family with our cards. Mid-November is the  Read more...
